bright-red beetroot (see photo) juice contains the chemical nitrate that dramatically reduces blood pressure, a study has found. researchers at queen mary, university of london, compared patients who were given a 250ml glass of beetroot juice in a day with those who took nitrate tablets. they found that the 2 methods were equally successful in reducing blood pressure, cutting the risk of heart disease, strokes and kidney failure.
英国伦敦大学皇后玛丽学院的科学家发现，色泽鲜红的甜菜根(见图)汁液含有一种硝酸盐成份，能够显著减轻高血压症状。研究者们将病人分成两组，一组在一天内喝了250毫升的甜菜根汁液，另一组服用硝酸盐药片。结果发现，这两种方式对降低血压有同等功效，从而减少患心脏病、中风和肾衰竭的风险。
