Using the ColorChecker? Gray Balance card for reflective spot exposure metering will give you the confidence that your images will be exposed as accurately as possible. The ColorChecker Gray Balance card is a pocket size version of the 18% gray reference square in the standard 24-patch ColorChecker. The gray is scientifically engineered to provide a precise uniform surface that is spectrally neutral, meaning it reflects equal amounts of red, blue and green in all types of light conditions.
The perceived color of white changes based on ambient conditions—outdoor it is perceived to be cooler, indoor, warmer, and under fluorescent light, greener. ColorChecker Gray Balance gives you the power to adjust your digital camera's color sensitivity to exactly match the ambient lighting conditions; in effect, changing what that the camera “sees.” Even in a controlled studio environment, establishing an accurate custom gray balance ensures an accurate image from the start of each new photo session.
The ColorChecker Gray Balance target can be used for a variety of applications:

对于数码相机而言，灰卡的确是一个相当有用的工具，它可以协助DC/DV来决定白平衡、暴光…等作业，相当值得摄影者一用。
目前，绝大部分数码单反相机都支持自定义白平衡，而在自定义白平衡操作中，使用标准灰卡是一种经济，也是普遍的做法。
标准灰卡
常见的标准灰卡是柯达公司也出品的灰度测试卡，通常，我们简称为灰卡，如下图：

灰卡的构成
灰卡的两面均有用处：
1.灰面：通常用来决定曝光值。
2.白面：通常用来决定白平衡。
在灰面的反射率为18%，这个值可视为平均测光的参考数据。而白面的反射率为，这一面是拿来做白平衡之用，平常不做曝光的参考。
上述18%、的误差率约1%。

灰卡在数码相机上的应用
1.决定白平衡时，请使用白面，不同的相机有不同的设定方式，但大多是进入“自定白平衡模式”对标准灰卡的白面，拍摄一张相片，DC便会得知在该光线条件下，什么才是”白色”。
2.决定曝光值时，请使用灰面，如果有反射式测光表时，可以测光表的值做参考（测光表请贴近灰卡），可以改变焦距，令其拍摄范围涵盖灰卡。

灰卡的其它作用

在摄影棚的多灯作业中，可以决定主副灯的照明比。
